Did you know that there’s an animal called a moon bear? The moon bear, also called the Asiatic black bear, is a member of the bear family found across Asia. It got its name because of the whitish mark shaped like a crescent moon on its chest. As magical as its name sounds, the sad truth is that there are only less than 60,000 of these beautiful animals in the wild. Aside from habitat loss, one major reason for its decline is bear bile farming.
In some parts of Asia, people believe that a bear’s bile can cure different ailments. For this reason, bears are being hunted and locked in small cages with catheters, syringes, or pipes inserted into their gallbladders to drain their bile. A lot of bears in these farms suffer from dehydration, starvation, and other diseases. Animals Asia is a group of people who can’t stand seeing these bears suffer anymore. They aim to end bear bile farming and improve the welfare of animals across Asia. To do this, they need support from the community. Hence, on September 16, they will be having Trek Mount Snowdown with Animals Asia. Proceeds from this event will go to the different rescue and welfare programs of Animals Asia.
THE CHALLENGE
Our epic trek up the tallest mountain in Wales is one of our favourite challenges! And it’s back by popular demand!
We have conquered the mountain in every possible kind of weather, and every single time it is a blast. Once described as a ‘big animal welfare hug’ this trek is a chance to meet other animal lovers from both our charity and also our trekking partner, Nowzad Dogs.
Each year we are led up the slopes by the wonderful Adventure Fitness Company who provide their qualified and experienced mountain leaders voluntarily in order to help us all raise money for Animals Asia.
At 1,085 metres, Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales and the same height as Table Mountain in South Africa. Our challenge is graded as hill walking and suitable for anyone with a reasonable fitness level – this is not a race but a personal or team challenge while raising much-needed funds for the animals you care about.
At the end of our trek, we all meet up in the local pub along with our trekking companions from Nowzad Dogs to take part in the customary pub quiz famously hosted by Pen Farthing. Of course, the competition will be on to see what team from which charity wins this year!
