Two churches 1 charity stir collards locally

Church will hold its annual A Taste of Allen Food Feast from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 580 George Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach. Since a February 2005 event, the Men of Allen Chapel have fired up their barbecue grills at 6 a.m. on the day of the feast, preparing chicken and ribs and then turning on the deep fryers for fish and turkeys. Other menu items include fried chicken, jerk chicken, baked turkey and dressing, potato salad, collard greens, corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, sweet potato pie and sodas. The cost is $10. “Every year the attendance increases,” said Ron Davis, coordinator of the event. “People come from various communities, including Palm Coast, Orlando, college campuses and barber shops. Even businesses have ordered for their employees’ enjoyment,” Davis said. For details, call Allen Chapel at 386-255-1195. · Black History Month 2009 is being celebrated at United Cerebral Palsy of East Central Florida with a Soul Food Luncheon scheduled for 11 a.m. Feb. 25. UCP is at 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive, Daytona Beach. The plan includes Southern fried chicken, hoppin’ john, macaroni and cheese, Southern-style green beans, corn bread, dessert and sweet tea. A musical presentation will take place at 10 a.m., prior to the meal. Cost is $3.50 a person. RSVPs are requested at 386-274-6474, ext. 50.
· Throw Down With Bethel third annual Soul Food Feast is planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 7 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 226 E. Howry Ave., DeLand.
